Any kind of jewelry can have a hint of ruby be it a necklace, ring, bracelet or earring. The expensive stone is usually small but very expensive. Your investment, however, can last longer if you maintain your ruby jewelry carefully. One of the ways of doing this is by taking your jewelry off when you are doing work that requires lifting or gardening. Ruby is a delicate gem which is easily broken if mishandled.
Like other precious stones, you can clean your ruby jewelry using water and a mild detergent. However, using a commercial solvent is more useful in cleaning ruby items. The cleaner which you purchase normally comes with a soft jewelry brush which is used for scrubbing your jewelry. If you choose to use water and a mild detergent, make sure that the temperature of the water is not too high because it will damage your jewelry.
Rubies can also be cleaned using alcohol and vodka. If your jewelry has too much dirt on it or there is a build-up of debris, you can soak it overnight in either alcohol or vodka. Rinse off the dirt and cleaner with clean water and then blot the jewelry using a piece of clean cloth until it is dry. While cleaning your rubies, make sure that you secure the surface on which you are working to avoid any damage to them.
The manner in which you store your rubies is also important. Ruby jewelry is usually stored in a piece of cloth or plastic bag. Do not store your rubies with other jewelry pieces unless you want them to be scratched by other hard stones such as diamonds. To avoid damaging your rubies too, you should protect them from harsh sprays, detergents and abrasion.
Daily ruby care can ensure that your jewelry retain their charm. However, you should take your jewelry to a professional jewelry cleaner once in a while for ultrasonic cleaning. If your jewelry is composed of other stones apart from rubies, you should not try cleaning it yourself as you may damage the weakest metal or precious stone in the setting.
