How to Choose a Necklace for Your Girlfriend

Purchasing a gift for the opposite sex can be intimidating, especially when it comes to jewelry.

Depending on where you turn for advice, you’re going to hear different recommendations and it’s easy to get overwhelmed but no matter who you end up making that final purchase with, these tips are sure to make the process that much easier.

You never know, you might end up enjoying yourself. I’m just kidding, but really, you’ll thank me later.

Pearl Necklace

Observation is key

Has your other half ever got dressed up for date night and you’ve asked something along the lines of “… Is that dress new?” and she’s either responded “this old thing?” like you’re on the set of a 1940’s movie? Or you find out that it’s been in and out of her wardrobe for 2+ years and you haven’t noticed?

Either way, that kind of approach isn’t going to cut it here. Take mental notes of what kind of jewelry she currently wears. Focus mainly on the type of chain she likes (gold, silver etc) and the ‘charms’ or pendants she favors.

Measurements

Don’t worry. Your secret is safe with me. I’m not going to suggest that you ask for her measurements and I certainly wouldn’t recommend wrapping a tape measure around her neck- not very subtle. There is a way around this, however. Here are the universal measurements for adult women:

  • Choker length: 16 inches
  • Length to collar bone: 17-19 inches
  • Falls just below the collar bone: 20 inches
  • At neckline: 22 inches
  • Just below neckline: 24 inches

And if you’re still in doubt, take one of the necklaces that she already owns and grab a measuring tape. The old-school way! (Don’t forget to measure to clasp too).

Shop Around

If you don’t have an eye for this type of thing, it can be easy to order something online and hope for the best. After all, you can’t go wrong with jewelry, right? Necklaces are an investment but that doesn’t mean it’s going to cost you your left arm to put a smile on her face.

Shop around for the best deals and when you see one you like, go in store and see if you’re still as sure about it. If you’re not 100% happy, look elsewhere.

Unique Necklace

Take your time

I’m hoping that, because you’re taking the time to read this, you have a while to weigh up your options (I suggest a good few months for this) but I realize that some of you may have left it to the last minute and are having a frantic search online for assistance, in which case, find a day when you have time to yourself and visit your local shopping mall but expect to be paying a little more. Remember, time is money. Oh and good luck!

Otherwise, I’d suggest checking out different online retailers and picking out a few that you like the look of, bookmark them and check back in a couple of weeks to see if they are having a sale. This also allows you to work out what kind of pieces you can afford with your budget.

Sentiment is everything

The thing that really makes jewelry special is the meaning behind it. If there’s a certain brand that you and/or she has a special connection to, shop there. If not, I would suggest investing some time into the pendant/charm that you want to feature on the showstopper. Here’s some ideas to inspire you to personalize your gift:

  • Angel: symbol of faith, guidance and protection.
  • Angel Wing: Symbol of spirituality, protection and love.
  • Buddha: A protective symbol, brings luck and positivity.
  • Bullet: Worn as a symbol of protection.
  • Butterfly: A lucky symbol representing love and new beginnings.
  • Cross: Believed to ward off evil and worn as a symbol of protection.
  • Dragonfly: Represents courage, strength and happiness.
  • Feather: A sign of freedom and courage.
  • Her birth stone

Woman wearing a necklace

What is her taste?

Does she wear the same necklace every day or does she have a select few pieces that she only brings out on special occasions? Keep these thoughts in mind when you’re choosing your metal. Let’s start off with the ones you’ve probably already heard of:

  • Sterling Silver is 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals. Pure silver is a very soft metal and so when it’s mixed with another metal, it becomes strongerperfect for everyday use.
  • Gold does not tarnish however pure gold often too soft to be made into jewellery.
  • Gold Filled pieces are created by bonding thin layers of gold to a base metal center, such as brass. This is the best alternative to solid gold, and is perfect for both every day and occasional wear.
  • Rose Gold is one of the most popular metals around right now, especially for young women. Rose Gold is an alloy formed of gold and copper to create a metal with a reddish tint. Although they can tarnish quicker than other gold, it can be maintained in the same way.

If you want to read some more information on what kind of metals have certain qualities, you can read all about them here.

Ask for help

Now you know what type of style she likes, you’ve spent your time productively scoping out the best pieces and even have a couple ideas in your head (extra boyfriend points), it’s time to ask for some help.

You’ve done well so far, all credit to you but don’t be afraid to ask for assistance before making your final decision. If asking for help in store is a little intimidating for you, try asking a family member of hers. Sisters are a good source of info.

The History of African Jewelry Pieces

African jewelry is made from different materials and they vary widely. Most pieces are made from materials which are readily available to the specific community. Some communities, however, imported materials such as gemstones which they could not produce themselves for making jewelry pieces.

Jewelry as an Accessory for Accentuating Outfits

There are various kinds of jewelry with distinct color shades available in the market. Therefore, one must know what kind of jewelry goes with what kind of outfit for an enhanced look. This is the key to accentuating one’s attire for an attractive appearance. One should know the kind of jewellery to wear and exactly how they should be worn. Just enough number of jewelry should be worn for any given attire in order to achieve a cohesive look. The first important factor to consider is the materials the jewelry is made of. This means that the jewelry should not just match the outfit but also each other. For instance, gold jewelry cannot be mixed with those made of glass.

Jewelry as an Accessory for Accentuating Outfits

One does not necessarily have to wear jewelry of a similar color as that of their outfit but one that is complementary is just enough. For instance, a blue dress would blend perfectly well with blue jewelry but wearing the same with gold or diamond jewelry such as necklaces, earrings, bangles or even rings would look just perfect. It is also important for every piece of jewelry worn to match each other so that the wearer can look great generally.

For a look with a more personalized touch, one can wear customized jewelry that features the name or picture of either the wearer or even that of a loved one. It can also feature the picture of a place that is really loved by the wearer. When wearing a necklace, one should note that the farthest it should go is the collarbone line unless it is those long ones with beads that are meant to go past the neckline of the top one is wearing. Another important aspect of wearing any kind of jewelry is to test them in order to ensure that the wearer is comfortable in them. This ensures that they do not have to remove the jewelry when they are at the important event they intend to attend.

Jewelry as an Accessory for Accentuating Outfits

Mixing formal jewelry with a casual outfit or vice versa is a sure way of getting an attractive look. For instance, a women wearing a casual outfit such as a T-shirt and jeans trouser, can go for the formal pearls and Swarovski jewelry. This is quite elegant but pairing this with a pair of sexy heels takes the look to the next level, making the woman look hot!

Jewelry Ideas for Teenage Girls

There are many jewelry ideas which you can use to get a gift for a teenage girl. However, considering their individual taste is important in the entire process. You need to do your homework well and find out which type of jewelry they prefer, whether it is gold or silver. Silver is popular but other metals such as stainless steel is also gaining popularity especially with contemporary jewelry.

You will also never go wrong with charms. These can be found in gift shops and jewelry stores. Manufacturers usually make a variety of charms and they can be worn on bracelets and other jewelry. The manufacturers also leave space for the wearer to keep their beads in place. When choosing charms, you need to look at the symbolism it puts forward. If your friend likes to skate, you can get them charms which resemble an ice skate.

Jewelry Ideas for Teenage Girls

If your teenage girlfriend is into Goth jewelry pieces, you can get her one for a gift. Black is usually the favorite color for those who like gothic jewelry. You can choose a skull charm for them or something that has bones. If the recipient, however, is a religious girl, you can get her a necklace which has a cross or engraved bible messages.

Jewelry Ideas for Teenage Girls

Before you get a teenage girl a jewelry gift, make sure that she will like it. You can ask them which kind of jewelry they wish they had and choose from there. Taking them shopping is the best way of ensuring you pick the right item but you cannot tag them along if you want to surprise them. Knowing their size is also important especially when you want to purchase jewelry such as rings or necklaces. If you do not know the right size of your friend’s wrist or finger, you can choose jewelry which do not necessarily require fitting.

Jewelry Ideas for Teenage Girls

Last but not least, it is important that you work with a budget so that you go for realistic jewelry options. Your gift need not be expensive but make sure that your friend likes it. You can even consider making the jewelry gift yourself especially in cases of beaded jewelry. This gives you the opportunity of personalizing the gift.
